Why do people cover license plates in photos? Like... really, why?

We have all seen posts in Facebook sales groups, or Facebook's Marketplace in which someone is selling their vehicle, they upload the photograph(s) and we notice that they have covered or erased the license plate either with a finger, their full hand, a piece of cardboard, paint or photoshop, or whatever.

You're probably one of those who think it's for security reasons, but then, shouldn't we all cover them while riding on the streets?

I mean, anyone can see them when we're driving, and at the end of the day, what do people imagine can happen if they don't cover the license plate when posting a picture of it online?

Do they really imagine that there is some super evil nerd-hacker who says: "Oh my God, finally a license plate that they forgot to cover! I'm going to charge them all the tickets I owe" or what? Is something like that what they imagine could happen?

There's a high probability that Hollywood is the one to blame for this, we have seen so many movies where the computer genius can turn all the traffic lights green with his mini laptop and can use all kinds of information (such as the license plate of a vehicle) to obtain all the owner's information such as his address, names of his children and even his pets´ names.

But... in terms of whether it's really dangerous or not, I'd say... let's just keep covering the license plates, y'all just infected me with paranoia, what if someone (just by knowing our license plate) manages to mortgage our houses and makes us creditors of a million-dollar debt while he enjoys the money.
