The Glorious 90's

Oh the nineties ... So missed, so remembered, so unique.

It does not matter if you, the reader of this article were born in the seventies or eighties, I'm pretty  sure you enjoyed the nineties as it was due (unless spent all that decade in jail).

The 90's began just when an important time ended, December 31, 1989 marked the end of the disco era, it was time to see what 10 more years had to offer, ten years called: The Nineties.

I think that even those born in 97 or 98 enjoyed those few years that were left before the 90's ended,  and how could they not? Being a baby, spending all the time sleeping and eating.

On the other hand, in the nineties were born some of the most admired stars today such as Emma Watson, Harry Styles, Chloe Grace Moretz, Kristen Stewart, oh, and that artist who dated Selena Gomez.

I dare to say that those who didn't play with a Nintendo or a Super Nintendo didn't really have a childhood. Who did not hear about Clinton and Lewinsky? Or about Lady Di? Who was not a Michael Jordan's fan and wanted to have his sneakers?

In the nineties we used to watch The Nanny, Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, That 70's Show,  Clarissa Explains It All, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Garfield and Friends, Animaniacs, we used to listen to the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Vengaboys, Christina Aguilera, Spice Girls (who remembers the movie?), on the slightly more underground scene Mtv constantly presented new videos of Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, The Offspring, Sugar Ray, among others. If you lived in the 90's and none of this rings a bell I just can suppose you were shipwrecked on an island for 10 years.

An immense amount of 90's children attended the Dragon Ball Z school (not literally of course), that anime marked the childhood of many of us, of course there were other series like Ranma ½, Sailor Moon, Evangelion and the almighty Pokemon which is still trending to this day, and so do Dragon Ball.

You don't have an idea of how much I loved the Scream trilogy (the fourth one premiered in 2011 and it totally sucked), but I used to watch the first 3 movies with my elementary school friends, and we watched Space Jam several, several times, I also fantasized pretty often with Nina Persson, vocalist of The Cardigans.

"Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer was shaping up to be the song of the decade, but no, the most representative song of the nineties may well be: "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls or "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears.

And I'm pretty sure I was not the only one who walked with his Walkman or Discman while doing chores at home, do you remember having to turn the cassette? Speaking about cassettes, back in '97 I found one in my uncle's room, I read "Nirvana" on it and as the curious boy I was I proceed to play it, the first song I heard was "Come As You Are", I remember the feeling, it marked that my life was dedicated to music.

Oh! And you probably had one or more of these CDs:

Among the deaths that occurred in the 90's that hurt me the most are the death of Kurt Cobain and  Selena, oh yeah, Selena, my mother used to admire her and so do I. It also hurt me when my Tamagotchi died.
In my case, I don't have plenty of scars in my body but many 90's children now have scars on their elbows, knees and head as a result of when they were involved in the skateboarding boom.
We are the generation that saw how Rose had to let go Jack's corpse in the water, although we all knew that they would perfectly have fit in that door and they could have had a happy life together.

Without understanding quite well how it worked I remember having grabbed a huge yellow cell phone that weighed a lot and belonged to my grandfather. Oh my! And if there was a video of how I used to rock with Korn's "Falling Away From Me" you all would laugh to death, that's what nowadays I love the most of the 90's decade, no one had smartphones to record every dumb thing that we would do as children or teenagers.

The year 2000 was about to arrive and the news that the world was going to end, the computers were going to explode and the airplanes were going to fall were invading the media. None of this happened, and to make fun of the bad omen the year 2000 gave us 2 remarkable films: Scary Movie and Charlie's Angels.

But going back to the 90's and to summarize more, here are other facts that also happened in the best decade ever (omitting boring historical events like "Iraq invaded Kuwait" and those things).

• Freddie Mercury died in 1991.

• There were Olympics Games in Barcelona (92) and Atlanta (96), the FIFA's world cups were celebrated in Italy (90), United States (94) and the remarkable France 98 in which France won.

• Toy Story premiered in 1995 and that's why at the premiere of Toy Story 4 you can see a lot of people in their twenties and thirties.

• Also in 1995, the first Play Station appeared.

• In 1996, we all wanted to see Independence Day and Mission: Impossible.

• In 1997 they said that the exploration of Mars had begun.

• From 98 onwards, Viagra made many men (and women) happy.

• We all wanted to have a cell phone in 1998.

• In 1999 Matrix came out and the Backstreet Boys released their famous album Millenium (I confess that I had it).

I am aware that I am omitting lots and lots of things that happened, that we lived, that we heard, but we are talking about ten years, and the 90's were not just any decade, damn, now I'm all melancholic and I feel like listening to Robbie Williams, can't wait to have grandchildren to tell them stories and say "back in my days...".

Greetings y'all 90's fellas.
