People that say "You know what I'm saying?" just way too much.

I am fortunate to have two very good psychologists friends, and in brief talks with them I addressed the subject of people who incessantly in their communication with others cannot avoid recurring again and again to phrases like the following:

  • You know what I'm saying?
  • You get it?
  • How can I put this?
  • You know how?

Although I, without being a psychologist, slightly imagined the causes of this behavior, the truth is that corroborating it with two trusted specialists was decisive in writing this article.

In their opinions (which they were not the same) they pointed out two possible causes for which a person repeats this type of phrases at every moment.

Theory 1:

It may be that it is closely linked with a superiority complex, like the exaggerated use of sarcasm, you probably know one or several people who at intervals interrupt their conversation to corroborate that you have the intelligence necessary to capture what they are saying and then they drop the question: "Know what I'm saying?" or also, the case of someone who is about to talk about something and says "I do not know should I put this but..." as if the mere use of words was not enough or escaped our understanding.

Theory 2:

It may be that these people need constant validation and corroboration that they are being listened to, in addition we can not blame them since it is highly probable that they are not aware of this, in addition, the superiority complex is also of inferiority, the person who suffers it surely have insecurities that need to be covered with other aspects in which he or she stands out (like talking about a complex topic).

Other more serious cases such as narcissism or megalomania can be pedantic for society since there's only a very small step between self-esteem and arrogance.

The question is: Do people who use phrases like: "Do you understand me?" recurrently see other people as inferiors? The answer probably cannot be applied generally, there will be someone who does it unconsciously and there will be someone who considers us all others as stupid ones.
